  Welcome to Alma

Scotland, U.S.A. is sometimes called Alma, Michigan! The city of Alma is located 50 miles north of Lansing, Michigan and with its adjacent neighbor city, St. Louis, Michigan, is located in the exact geographic center of Michigan. Alma was named after the daughter of an early settler in the 19th century.

The Scottish heritage of the area runs deep and has been celebrated for over 35 years with an annual Highland Festival on the picturesque campus of Alma College. The festival draws thousands of visitors from neighboring states and provinces of Canada. It is among the largest Scottish festivals in North America and certainly the largest in this part of the United States. The festival is held each year on Memorial Day weekend, Friday through Sunday. The weekend is an immersion in Scottish culture and customs and features concerts, pipe band competition, highland dancing competition and traditional Scottish athletic events.

Alma is home to Gratiot Health System, Alma College, Alma Symphony Orchestra, the renowned Michigan Masonic Home, a wide variety of companies and businesses and Gratiot County Airport which features charter jet service.
